A painting that depicts ‘raw’ realities – Known as one of the most ancient folk art in the world, the Warli paintings are a form of tribal wall paintings done by the largest tribe of Maharashtra- The Warlis. Traditionally, these paintings were made by the Warli women a backdrop of mud and cow dung cakes. Though their origin dates back to 10 A.D, the Warli paintings only received recognition around 1970s. The paintings feature simple geometric shapes such as circles, squares and triangles to engage in a complex visual storytelling of life, death, nature, and fertility. The rawness of this art form emerges from its process of creation- rice is grinded with a natural binder for making paints and bamboo sticks are used as brushes.’ The enigmatic yet simplistic appeal of the Warli paintings can easily capture the hearts of all.
