Iron and stories that never erode
Wrought Iron craft, also known as ‘Pitva Art’ is an ancient art form practiced by the Lohar tribal community in Chhattisgarh. The artisans make use of leftover or waste iron pieces to create a variety of unique animal and human figurines that serve as utility and décor items. Alongside heat, simple tools such as hammers and chisels, are utilized to mould ‘peaks and valleys’ in the ironwork. Every iron piece is then treated with red oxide and a three-layer coating of oil paint to ensure the long-lasting lustre of the items. The remarkable skill and technique employed in the ironwork ensures that these pieces, and the age-old stories behind them, never erode.
